Largest Appendix Removed

Dr. Riaz Ahmed Khokhar; Islamabad, Pakistan; June 11, 2003.

An appendix removed from a 55-year-old Pakistani man on June 11, 2003, at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad, Pakistan, measured 23.5 cm (9.2 in) in length. The operation was carried out by Dr. Riaz Ahmed Khokhar.

The appendix is a long, thin, worm-like pouch sticking out of the join between the large and small intestines. Doctors are still not sure of its purpose – or even if it has a purpose – and although it contains immune-system cells, if it's surgically removed, health doesn't suffer.

Youngest Person to Wear Dentures

Alexander Stone; Henderson, Kentucky, USA; June 7, 2001.

Alexander Stone of Henderson, Kentucky, USA, was fitted with a full set of dentures on June 7, 2001, at the age of just 4 years 301 days. He received the false teeth to compensate for an hereditary condition called dentinogenesis imperfecta, which weakens the teeth.

"This condition is hereditary and was passed on to Alex by his mother," said Dr. Joseph E. Morton of the Morton Family Dentistry. "All of his teeth, primary and permanent, are discolored, have no pulp, and are very weak. His mother presented the problem to our office and wanted us to give her son an option that would give him the "look" of soon-to-be classmates. And we did!"
